Why music theory doesn't teach you to improvise

Reader,

Do you know a ton of music theory, but your solos still don't sound like the records you love?

For the longest time, I was disappointed in my playing. I thought it was because I didn't understand the theory well enough. I thought that if I just bought one more book and worked through it, that book might fill the gap.

But no. I was missing the other half of jazz. All the theory in the world makes you an analyst, but it doesn't give you the language to "say" anything interesting.

In this week's video we bridge that gap by learning some language from Sonny Stitt on "I'll Remember April."
