Which "Beginner" Jazz Songs Should You Learn First?

Reader,

My student James and I were looking at a list online of the "50 most essential jazz standards for beginners." And, we definitely did not agree with the whole list.

But that left us wondering... what songs should a beginner actually learn first?

So, we pulled out the camera and recorded ourselves going through the list one tune at a time. I gave each one a grade, from A-D, based on what I would recommend for my students.

Which "Beginner" Jazz Songs Should You Learn First?

Some of the tunes we ranked:

  • Autumn Leaves
  • Fly Me to the Moon
  • Misty
  • Take the “A” Train
  • All the Things You Are
  • So What
  • Summertime
  • Body and Soul
  • Stella by Starlight
  • Footprints
  • Blue Monk
  • The Girl from Ipanema

I'm curious, where do you agree or disagree? I'd love to hear which ones you would rank differently.

Happy Practicing,

Josh Walsh
