Write Your Own Summertime Solo (and Get Roasted!)

This week's workshop: Adding enclosures to Summertime and composing our own solo. More details below...

Reader,

This week, you are the soloist! By Friday, you will have written your own solo over Summertime. At the workshop this week, we'll play through them together and I'll roast 🔥 you (with love).

What We've Learned

  1. We've memorized the changes to Summertime.
  2. Learned several sets of chord voicings.
  3. Practiced the Red Garland rhythm in our left hand.
  4. Learned methods for creating tension and release over each chord.
  5. Learned different scales we can use over the chords.
  6. Targeted chord tones in a call and response style.
  7. This Friday, we'll add enclosures to further emphasize those target notes.

If you've missed any of these workshops, you can watch the replays here.

Your Assignment

Download the blank solo worksheet and compose a solo over the changes. Go phrase by phrase.

  • Sing each solo phrase first.
  • Once you can sing it, play it.
  • Finally, write it down.

When you are done, post your solo in the community in the #live-workshops room.

Study Josh's Solo

Here's what I've written. I left some annotations for you to understand what I was thinking about on each phrase.
