So this is why we practiced those scales

Reader,

Take a listen to how Joey DeFrancesco uses the Rhythm Changes scales we learned last week in his solo over Rhythm-A-Ning.

Joey DeFrancesco

Rhythm-A-Ning

That scale outline from last week, which we've been practicing together in our workshops, shows you which basic scales work over each bar of the Changes.

We're looking at the 2nd time through the Changes in his solo, which starts at 1:06.

The outline I've had us working on is a rote exercise to get our hands moving over these changes melodically. It's useful, but not very musically interesting.

But in this example you can see those same scale concepts showing up as the basis for Joey's solo. Does he play other ideas and rhythms? Sure. But the same foundation is there.

Important - Joey's Changes have a common substitution from the traditional Changes... he changes the Gm7 in the A section into G7. This results in B naturals in the line. So, don't let that throw you... its the same scales, just with that Bb switched out on those chords.
