My full transcription of Stan Getz 🎷 (Girl from Ipanema)

Reader,

This photo is Helô Pinheiro. When she was 17 years old, living in Rio de Janeiro, she used to walk by the same cafe each and every day. Antônio Carlos Jobim took notice of this and ultimately it inspired the great jazz standard, Girl From Ipanema.

Girl From Ipanema's most famous recording comes from Stan Getz and João Gilberto. The song is sung in Portuguese by João, and while not originally planned, they also recorded his wife Astrud singing it in English. The rest is history.

This week we are learning a great jazz ballad, The Nearness of You this week. We'll be taking our 4-note voicings and exploring ways to make them rich and lush 5, or even 6-note voicings with lots of color.

On Zoom at 1pm Eastern, this Friday, Feb 21.

Today's 2-5-1

Each week I share 2 transcribed phrases, 5 ideas observed from 1 featured jazz recording.

This week, a bit of a treat, because I've transcribed the full extended solo from Stan Getz.

The Girl from Ipanema

Stan Getz (tenor), João Gilberto (guitar, vocal), Antônio Carlos Jobim (piano), Sebastião Neto (bass), Milton Banana (drums), Astrud Gilberto (english vocal)

The solo starts at 2:35. Below is just a few of my favorite bars from the solo, but be sure to grab the full transcription along with my observations throughout.
