Miles Davis' 🎺 solo over On Green Dolphin Street

Reader,

In 1958, the Miles Davis Sextet laid down On Green Dolphin Street in a Columbia Records studio in New York City. The track was later re-released on several compilations, including as a bonus track on the 50th anniversary release of Kind of Blue.

There is so much to learn by studying Miles' solo on this track. Let's take a look...

Let's Play This Solo at Friday's Workshop

Over the past few weeks we've been focused on how to connect chords and scales together through scale running, arpeggio motion, enclosures and approaches.

These are some of the most helpful exercises to practice, but not the most fun. So, lets take a break this week and explore this solo from Miles Davis together to see Miles puts those ideas into action.

On Zoom at 1pm Eastern, this Friday, April 18.

Today's 2-5-1

Each week I share 2 transcribed phrases, 5 ideas observed from 1 featured jazz recording.

On Green Dolphin Street

Recorded by the Miles Davis Sextet. Miles Davis (trumpet), Cannonball Adderley (alto), John Coltrane (tenor), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums)

New Course and Videos Have Been Released

This week I launched 12 new videos for our members which are available for you to watch now.

  1. I've completed the 2nd half of our series on comping voicings with new videos for the 3-note, single hand versions, including a new worksheets for each.
  2. I've re-produced all of the videos on our swing feel comping as they were 4 years old. I rewrote and shot brand new replacement videos for each of those, including the charleston, reverse charleston, red garland and freddie green patterns.
  3. I've added 2 new songs to the Song Breakdowns course. Blue Bossa and Nearness of You.

New Chord Voicings Course

The Jazz Fundamentals Course was becoming quite large, pushing 150 videos. I've started a new project to break that course up, turning each chapter into a standalone course. As I do this, I'm updating content as needed, producing new workbooks and practice tracks.

I just completed the first of these with our brand new Chord Voicings Course. This includes 34 video lessons and a 40 page workbook. The videos from the Chord Voicings chapter of Jazz Fundamentals were moved here, and new videos were shot to complete the package.

This course is included in our Annual Membership or can be purchased individually for a one-time purchase.
